In January, Chancellor Fariña announced a reorganization of the New York City Department of Education school support structure to be put into place by September. That reorganization will move power back to geographically-based Superintendents and create Borough Field Service Centers. The members of the ARISE Coalition have offered several suggestions to the Department about how to make the reorganization successful for schools and families. The ARISE Coalition testified before the New York City Council Committee on Education regarding the Fiscal Year 2016 Preliminary Budget, urging the Council to fund an initiative proposed by the Mayor to support literacy development for students with disabilities, including students with dyslexia, as a down payment on what we hope will be a longer-term commitment to ensuring that every student in NYC, with and without disabilities, learns to read proficiently.
